Summer Online Media Workshops
To be conducted in the lab (NCB 105 or IMC). Sessions will be 1 to 2 hours each, and will help students learn some of the basic digital web communications skills necessary to work in the journalism field.

Blogging and Content Management Tools:
How to create a blog. Rules for writing content, setting up a site, understanding how to use social media tools to leverage the content in your blog. How content management systems work.
Tools used: WordPress
Photography and Photoshop:
The basics of how to take a good photograph. Composition, lighting, balance. Using Photoshop to retouch photographs, crop and resize photographs, and creating digital images for the web.
Tools used: Camera phones, Photoshop
Web Design & HTML/CSS Lite:
Understanding how the web works. Creating basic HTML pages using a CSS template. Manipulating HTML and CSS to personalize your social media. Publishing using FTP. Understanding file structure.
Tools used: Dreamweaver
TBD or Social Media:
Depending on the experience of the group: How to use Twitter as a powerful information gathering and sharing tool. Topics include: setting up an account; doing a profile; following/followers (finding people to follow, how to maintain your followship ratios); Twitter conventions: DMs, RT, hashtags; Using Lists to stay current. Tweetdeck as a tool. Other social media tools: using Facebook, LinkedIn as a networking tool, other social media sites: Tumblr, Pinterest Flickr, Picassa, etc., and other services: Instagram, Vine, WhatsApp.
